Was there any objection to the twin towers (wtc) when it was built in the 1970's?

Just wondering as they were very tall and excuse me fairly ugly buildings compared to empire state, chrysler etc. Plus there was two of them, which i find odd, why was there 2, what does that symbolise? I am curious because i understand that americans have reservations about the new freedom thing and that it doesn't look good. But i think the city will grow to love it and that it is a good design as is the memorial to 9/11.
